The <xsl:variable> in xslt is not actual a variable. Which means it can not be changed after you have defined it and you can use it like this: lets say we have this xml with name test.xml

If those path are known in advance like this case, then you can use: <xsl:variable name="vCondition" select="node/@attribute = 0"/> <xsl:variable name="test" select="actual/path[$vCondition] .

The value of such a parameter may be set when the XSLT processor is called. How this is done depends on the processor and whether you call it from the command line or by program.
